Recognizing and Working with Autistic Women: A Neurodivergence-Affirming Approach

In this training, you’ll learn how to identify autistic women and why they are often missed in therapy. You’ll walk through a case study illustrating different ways autism presents in adults, with an overview of laws and ethics of providing a diagnosis. Finally, you’ll learn about providing neurodivergence-affirming care, treatment considerations, and when to refer out. The presenter will use lecture to support the learning objectives, and there will be time for questions and answers at the end of the course.

Upon completion, Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize signs of autism that are often missed in women

  • Apply DSM 5TR diagnostic criteria for autism to a case study

  • List 3 neuro-affirming treatment recommendations when working with autistic women

Presenter: Leah Barnes, LCMHCS

Leah Barnes is an accomplished mental health counselor with over 19 years of experience in providing therapy. At her private practice, Leah specializes in providing counseling and evaluations for autistic and ADHD adults, as well as licensure supervision for newly graduated clinicians. She also relies on her personal experience of being an AuDHD clinician and a parent of two neurodivergent children. Holding a Master’s degree from the University of Central Florida, she also has training in play therapy, brainspotting, and working with the adoption constellation. Outside of her professional commitments, Leah enjoys crocheting, hiking, and backpacking, reflecting her dedication to holistic personal development.
