OCD Treatment in Charlotte, NC

Online OCD Treatment in Charlotte and throughout North and South Carolina

You worry all the time and it feels like no matter what you do, it never gets better. You have these thoughts that you just don’t understand. So many “what ifs.” You feel like you can’t be sure of your own thoughts, which can feel strange to say, and yet it’s true. This doubt is taking a huge toll on your relationships with friends, family, and work.

You’re doing what you can to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, but it never feels like enough. It seems like if you could just try hard enough, say just the right thing, or do things in just the right way, everything would be safe. Sometimes you even “test” yourself to be sure the worries aren’t true, but that just leads to more worries about “if I’m testing myself, I must really think these things.”

You’ve been to therapy before for anxiety or depression, but it just hasn’t been enough. It’s like there’s a missing piece of things. You wish there was someone who could understand that it’s not that you want to do these things, it’s that you worry you *might want to. You just want someone to get it.

 OCD Treatment Options

Things can get better.

I help folks with these intrusive thoughts to overcome them so that they can feel free in their daily life. Some of my clients come in suspecting they have OCD, and some have known for years, but all of them are looking for healing. Together we come up with a plan for your OCD that you truly have control over. Many folks are nervous about doing exposures, and that’s ok, since I offer many different models to choose from. Where you have a true voice in how we treat your OCD, and we can work through it together. You get things to work on outside of sessions so the healing work can continue. All with a heaping dose of sarcasm, cursing, and humor.

My clients typically see me on a weekly basis for consistent support and to really get moving on treating their OCD. Some folks even prefer twice-a-week or 90-minute sessions to start with so they can maximize their time. While I do use some ERP for people who want it, I also use a newer model called I-CBT which doesn’t require exposures or intentionally increasing your anxiety. We can also do some yoga, mindfulness, and other body-based work to help you feel calmer between sessions. The choice is always up to you though. While therapy is hard, it doesn’t have to be scary. It can help you get to feeling like you are in control of your life again. And it can be so worth it.

Frequently asked Questions about OCD treatment in Charlotte NC

  • The best treatment is the one that works for you! Many people think of ERP (exposure and response prevention) as the only treatment for OCD, but that’s not true- there are other options out there.

I provide different choices for treating your OCD. While some folks prefer to use ERP, many find the thought of exposures intimidating, or it hasn’t worked for them in the past. I-CBT (or inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy) is another form of OCD treatment that doesn’t require any exposures at all. Many people find ICBT to be a way to really get at what’s under the intrusive thoughts, rather than just focusing on behaviors.

I always talk through options with my clients so they can find the way to treat their OCD that works for them. If you want to learn more about the different types of OCD treatment I offer, click here to schedule a free consult.

  • While many people think of OCD as excessive handwashing or being overly neat and clean, there are many other symptoms of OCD.

People with OCD experience intrusive thoughts. These are thoughts that you may not know where they came from, but they upset you, and they tend to get “stuck.” These thoughts can be incredibly scary at times, such as worries that you might want to hurt yourself or others. They may be thoughts about needing constant reassurance that you are doing things “right.” Or they can be thoughts and worries about contamination and cleanliness.

Compulsions are the behaviors that come along with the thoughts in an attempt to make them stop. Some compulsions are observable, such as handwashing, counting, redoing a task until it feels complete, or even avoiding certain situations. But compulsions can be mental as well, such as ruminating, getting constant reassurance, or even trying to cancel out bad thoughts.
